Joe Kurmaskie

Executive Director

Joe Kurmaskie is the author of 10 books including Metal Cowboy,  Lightning in a Saddle and Momentum Is Your Friend. He started a blues festival, in New Mexico, has written for Outside, Parenting, Details, Bicycling Magazine and Rolling Stone, He’s traveled the world by bike and has grown a small bike nonprofit giving away 250 bikes annual in 2017 to 10,000 bikes in 2026. He loves to travel and draw and spend time with his four sons and his partner, Kate Steinberg.

Douglas Rich

I grew up on an apple orchard in Connecticut.  Along with my largely unsupervised friends, I invented trail biking  – grinding my Schwinn Stingray on muddy horse-trials through the hardwoods.  I moved from Wall Street to Portland in 1994, mainly to spend more time on two wheels and raise two sons , and less time behind a desk.  After retiring from banking in April 2022, a happy coincidence found Mark Waller and me at the LO food pantry at the same time, which brought me to FB4K. 

My wife Karen and I enjoy e-cycling locally and in exotic places whenever possible.   I am grateful to the Reborn/FB4K Board for their service in making a difference in the lives of so many children and their families.

Anthony Albert

A lifetime dedicated to service—both in uniform and in the community—defines the career and contributions of Anthony. With a rich history of professional leadership and philanthropic dedication, he has consistently sought opportunities to support and uplift those around him.

Anthony’s service includes being a Board Member for Portland Backpack, which provides food for kids in 15 schools. Donating to the Obama Foundation and Make-A-Wish Portland, where he also met with CEO Laila Cook to identify additional volunteer opportunities. He has contributed to Bridge Meadows, an organization that creates and inspires intergenerational communities.

He is a Silver Lifetime Member of the NAACP, the nation’s oldest and largest civil rights organization. He has been a member of the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) since 2021. He has consistently contributed to the Riverdale School Foundation.

Mark Waller

Mark Waller has been the Founder/President of BridgeWorks Capital, LLC since 1985.   BridgeWorks focuses on commercializing technology from universities and national labs.  Waller served as the co-founder and later Chairman of GE PrimeStar, GE’s solar manufacturing division, from 2008-2011.

Waller has served on many local Boards including SEI (past member of the Exec Comm), Habitat for Humanity Portland Region (past Chair), Maitripa College, Lake Oswego Rotary, Friends of the Columbia Gorge, the National University of Natural Medicine (past Chair) and established the Free Bikes4 Kidz Portland Chapter which merged into the regional Reborn Bikes organization.

Waller has around 5K miles on his current TREK Madone.

Kate Steinberg

As a native Portlander, raised in its many distinctive neighborhoods, Kate knows her community thru and thru: its people, schools, restaurants and parks. Outside of her active career in real estate, Kate has been involved in many humanitarian activities, including serving as a board member for the Japanese Dual Language Immersion Program, being a host family to visiting Japanese students and interns, raising two boys, and becoming an involved supporter of Reborn Bikes. Kate’s latest adventures in bicycling find her exploring as many repurposed rail trails around the country as possible.

Lisa Heathman

As a senior partner at the global PR firm Finn Partners, Lisa provided expertise in advancing the goals of B2B and B2C companies in tech, financial and consumer sectors. She had a lifelong love of the outdoors and a commitment to volunteerism, serving as a board member for Habitat for Humanity Portland, FB4K and the National Marketing Committee for Friends of the Children. Lisa was a 2nd degree black belt in Taekwondo, and competed as an amateur competitive cyclist, winning the Masters Women’s BAR in 2016 for the state of Oregon.

Mike Brohoski

After spending 40 years in the technology industry, which included 22 years with Intel, Mike has transitioned to role as Business Development Manager for Commercial Real Estate NW. He also is leveraging his knowledge and expertise at organizations such as Lake Oswego Rotary and Reborn Bikes to scale the impact of his efforts.

Kevin Kirkemo

Kevin’s passion for Reborn Bikes is rooted in the belief that access to a bicycle can meaningfully change someone’s life. He is deeply motivated by the organization’s ability to provide reliable transportation to individuals and families who might not otherwise have it, while also creating a powerful environmental impact by keeping thousands of bikes out of landfills each year. For Kevin, one of the most meaningful parts of Reborn’s mission is seeing children gain access to bicycles and watching families ride together. Moments like a parent teaching their child how to ride during a community bike rodeo capture exactly why the work matters and why Reborn Bikes plays such an important role in strengthening local communities.

An avid cyclist himself, Kevin finds joy in road riding throughout Portland and the surrounding region, using the bike as a way to stay active, clear his mind, and experience the city at a slower and more connected pace. He organized his first Rim Ride at Crater Lake with family and fellow board members and hopes to make it an annual tradition that celebrates community, movement, and the outdoors. Outside of Reborn Bikes, Kevin works in the life sciences technology space, focusing on strategy and innovation, particularly around emerging tools like artificial intelligence. In his free time, he enjoys travel, photography, hiking, and cooking, always looking for new places to explore and experiences to share. As President, Kevin is excited about the organization’s continued growth and the opportunity to expand Reborn Bikes’ reach so even more people can experience the freedom and joy that comes from riding a bike.

Bryan Dawson

Bryan was born in Portland in 1967 and attended Clackamas High School in its old building.  He attended colleges and graduate schools in Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., London, Chicago, New York, and Berkeley.  After graduating from Boalt Hall Law School at the University of California Berkeley, he worked for a large technology law firm for three years, representing clients such as Sun Microsystems and Cadence Designs.  In 1999, he and his wife and three kids returned to Oregon, where Bryan joined Dawson Law Group.  He is very active in the Lake Oswego community, where he coaches high school mock trial teams. Bryan commutes to work on his Trek cyclocross bicycle as often as possible.

James Ruble

A Reborn Bikes board member since inception, James has been helping children where and when it is possible, as sharing is all we have.  James’s cycling journey began when he was in the first grade, and he used bicycles to commute throughout his time as a student. He continued is love of cycling by working in bicycle shops, and now has an opportunity to give back to others.  He is a retired owner of an international business.
